If you really want Compostmodern to make a difference and impact designers around the world, you need to make the videos from the event free and easily available. I am writing a blog about the event, and was discouraged to find no supporting video except for a few random YouTube clips.

Comment on Compostmodern 09 speaker Emily Pilloton thinks you could have a future with Amtrak. by Nicole Matisse

Emily - I can't agree with you more!

Last summer, my twin sister Zanetha and I decided to embark on a Slow Trip in honor of our attendance at Slow Food Nation, in San Francisco. We designed our trip to include Slow Living and Slow Food components along the way from Seattle to Eugene to San Francisco to Marin County to the Santa Cruz Mountains to Los Angeles. We decided that our mode of transportation for the entire trip would be as sustainable as possible and incorporate Amtrak trains, local buses, BART – while in SF, and, when a car was absolutely necessary, a full carpool.

Our first day of travel was absolutely fabulous! Turns out we were on a brand new Amtrak train, so it was positively spotless. And, due to a last minute decision to prep some artichokes and aioli for the mid-afternoon trip down to Eugene, we arrived with minutes to spare. The conductor hastily scooped us on to the train and demanded we take the nearest seats immediately - hence, a free upgrade to business class. We were stoked when we (falsely) assumed that our Amtrak experience would carry on down the coast in a quiet and pristine environment, complete with plush, leather seats.

Well, needless to say, the other totally chaotic and outrageously uncomfortable trips to SF and LA were not at all reflective of what we had pictured in our idealistic heads. NOT fabulous! We agree that Amtrak needs a systems-wide upgrade that embraces a more aesthetic experience that is more reflective of the romantic notion of Train Travel. And, we hope to see an innovative design team take on the challenge and engage Amtrak to overhaul the full experience from departure to arrival.

Thats stout! Keep up the great work! I'm a artist and designer who is very much influenced by the principals of permaculture design. I believe if more designers incorporated these principals which are based on natural processes we would make huge inroads.
